Yu Nagaba was born in Tokyo in 1976. He learned oil painting in Turkey, where he moved following a transfer from his father. Returning to Japan, he graduated in art in Tokyo and began his career in a clothing company for which he designed t-shirts. He then started freelancing and tried various styles until 2014 when he focused on these black and white illustrations, composed of fine lines. The same year, he gained recognition thanks to a cover for POPEYE magazine, a men's magazine that has existed since 1976. His work is greatly influenced by films, particularly American, and music. He works with many brands, such as Pokémon and Adidas and in 2019 he presented these works in an exhibition called "Express more with less" which focused on his move to canvases. The following year, a new exhibition, called "The Last Supper" was held at the SAI art gallery located in Shibuya. Since then, he has continued to work for various monthlies and brands and held exhibitions in Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. This little booklet includes these personal works, selected by Yu Nagaba himself, from 2014 to 2018 as well as an interview with the artist.
Yu Nagaba est née à Tokyo en 1976. Il apprend la peinture à l'huile en Turquie, où il déménage suite à une mutation de son père. Revenu au Japon, il est diplômé en art à Tokyo et commence sa carrière dans une entreprise de vêtement pour laquelle il dessine des tee-shirts. Il se lance par la suite en freelance et essaye divers styles jusqu'en 2014 où il va se concentrer sur ces illustrations en noir et blanc, composé de fines lignes. La même année, il obtient la reconnaissance grâce à une couverture pour le magazine POPEYE, un magazine de monde masculin qui existe depuis plus de 40 ans.
Son travail est grandement influencé par les films, en particulier américain et la musique. Il travaille avec de nombreuses marques, telles que Pokémon et Adidas et en 2019, il présente ces œuvres lors d'une exposition intitulée "Express more with less" qui se concentre sur son passage aux toiles. L'année suivante, une nouvelle exposition, nommée "The Last Supper" est tenue à la gallerie d'art SAI situé à Shibuya. Depuis, il a continué à travailler pour divers mensuels et marques et a tenu des expositions à Hong Kong, Taiwan et en Chine. Il a dessiné une collection de vêtement pour UNIQLO en collaboration avec le musée du Louvre en 2022. Ce petit opuscule comprend ces travaux personnels, sélectionnés par Yu Nagaba lui même, de 2014 à 2018 ainsi qu'une interview de l'artiste.
